How many Buggy Whip jobs could we get back if we just outlawed those confounded automobile do-hickies?

Oddly, this isn't such a goofy question because there are forces within our social and political realm that actually do want to 'go back' to a simpler time that never was. A so-called 'golden age' is sometimes alluded to and a path there could be opened if only we'd 'outlaw' this, that or the other thing. If gays were back in the closet, if women couldn't vote, if there was no Miranda warning, if all states brought back the death penalty, if large numbers of people could be deported all at one time with no exceptions, if there was no EPA, no Federal reserve, no welfare, no income tax, no business regulations and so on and so forth we would be better off in every possible way...so claim various political factions. Fortunately history tends to move forward, though there are always forces at work that actually do try to reverse or stop both social and technological progress. The Taliban in Afghanistan would prevent girls from attending school, the Christian conservatives would roll back abortion rights to zero, the Pope would ban contraception and the John Birch Society would stop the fluoridation of drinking water because it's a communist plot to weaken the youth of our nation. Sometime these reactionaries actually do win as is the case in China and Iran where the internet is constantly under fire and forces the shut down of certain sites for some supposed social good. Yet, like river water around a rock, progress and change is never ending no matter how may King Canute's attempt to hold back the seas of change. I sorta' like that way...in the end, most people do too.
